Debunking Religion

Hello. I welcome you to explore with me the many reasons why religion and belief in any god or gods is  ridiculous. Not only ridiculous, but often harmful to the individual  believer as well as to being harmful to society  in general.

I wasn’t always an atheist. In fact, I spent two decades searching for god and religious truth. I truly believed there had to be a creator of the universe, that there had to be a purpose and meaning behind it all. I so desperately wanted to be a part of that purpose and meaning, and I sincerely sought it in various religions. I poured myself into Christianity, Buddhism, then, finally, Hinduism. With each one I gave myself fully. I really believed I found the truth, but then I would discover things that just didn’t make sense. I would ask the spiritual leaders for answers, but they never had them. I was crushed each time I discovered the religion just couldn’t be true. Then I would move on to the next one, only to experience the same thing.

This searching of mine was tiring. I truly wanted there to be a god and a purpose to the universe.

The last religion I explored was Hinduism. When I discovered the holes that made me realize Hinduism couldn’t be true I finally realized that there is no god. There can’t be. If he/she/it wanted to be worshipped he ( I will use the masculine pronoun only because I am a male) would not make it so hard to discover which religion is true. Think about it. Many religions have dire consequences for not believing in their god: burn in hell for all eternity. All the major religions of today seem equally plausible (or implausible). Does the punishment of eternal fire seem fitting for choosing the wrong one?

So I decided to explore atheism and humanism, and you know what? It actually made sense. Here I found people who were generally rational and used their critical thinking skills. I learned that it was ok to not know all the answers. I learned to base my knowledge and beliefs on evidence. I learned about the scientific  method. I discovered a rich heritage of men and women who by using the scientific method made great discoveries that helped push our world forward and expanded our knowledge. I was amazed at the pure sanity of this approach. It was like all the blocks in my head fell into place, and everything made sense. It was a glorious new world for me to explore.

Once I discovered that religions were false, I started to see how damaging they are, how they promote racism, the subjugation of women, and violence. They slow the progress of our societies, and stunt healthy thinking skills in those who believe.

Join me as I explore how religion is a cancer that needs to be eradicated. I realize that many good people are religious, but this does not excuse the cancerous effects of of the institutions they belong to.
